While the service was fantastic, the prices were pretty high for what you’re getting (i.e. hot & sour soup at $9.50 a bowl?!), and the food was mediocre at best. However, it’s only two blocks from our apartment and they were nice enough to deliver, since we were so close and they were having a slow night.
On a 1-10 here was our dinner: Egg Roll (2 – small, flavorless), Fried Prawns (6 – decent flavor, tender), BBQ Pork Fried Rice – in which the pork was sliced and lay on top of the rice (1 – dry-as-dust meat, rice tasted like oily plastic), Special Garden Chow Mein (7 – filled with mushrooms, asparagus, and brocoli it had lots of flavor, this was the saving grace), Sweet & Sour Pork (4 – interesting brown sauce, really tough meat), Mongolian Beef (6 – decent flavor, really tender, no heat though) and Almond Chicken (2 – ate breading and left chicken, not much to say here). They also gave us a whopping teaspoon side of ketchup (eek!) and hot mustard that had no flavor or heat.
So, would we eat here again? We both came up with a solid no. We’ll try and find something better, even if they aren’t close and don’t deliver.
Yes :-) Dan Weech's review (Jun 27th 2008)
I have eaten at China Garden many times and have never been disappointed. The food are authentic and are obviously made from very fresh ingredients. Anyone who has every tried there Honey Walnut Prawns knows what I mean. They along with other dishes are to die for. I am no slouch to judging Asian as I lived in San Francisco for 22 years. The only thing I agree with the other reviewer is that the barbecued pork is on the dry side as Lean and non fatty pork id use. (please add some fat for flavor ! ) Regardless I would highly recommend this establishment to any friend.
