See, the Hillyard bar might be a good place for a game of pool and some blues music, but the food is really not very good. I’m still not sure what kind of spices they used on my pork sandwich, though I have a distinct feeling their main purpose was to mask the flavor of the meat which actually felt like it might have been off. Topping it with iceberg lettuce and what tasted like a 99c mustard from Fred Meyer did not improve the overall impression either.

No :-( Dan's review (Feb 13th 2007)

While I can’t recommend the Bluz for their food, I do like the place as a bar.

The atmosphere is nice, dimly lit but not dark, classy furniture and decor, attentive wait staff, lots of flat panels displaying sports and blues bands. I like to go there for a couple drinks with friends and co-workers.

Unfortunately the food is not up to par with the rest of the establishment. I’ve eaten there a few times and can’t really say I’d recommend it for the food.

Recently I tried the steak bites appetizer. They should really call it the steak bits appeteaser. You really only get a couple ounces of steak cut into 1/2 inch cubes. The taste was okay, but nothing to write home about.

If you’re into nachos they are alright. The plate is huge though, so either be hungry or have three friends to help you out. They don’t skimp on the hamburger, they do use real cheese instead of Cheeze Whiz, the tomatoes seem to be fresh but the jalepanos are from a jar.

I also went there with a friend and ordered the pork chop sandwich. The meat tasted like it came straight out of the freezer, into the microwave, and then tossed on the grill so it wasn’t soggy. The flavor was quite bland, especially for a cajun themed menu. My friend said the BLT was ‘Just OK.’

The one dish I had there that I can say was good would be the catfish bites. They were big chunks of battered fish with some good seasoning. Unfortunately, they are no longer on the menu.
